Five things we have learnt in five years at Hey Me
Posted by Emma Lever on 26 August 2022

This week marks an exciting milestone for the Hey Me team – it is officially our fifth birthday!

The Hey Me stands in a row looking out at the camera in York Museum Gardens

The past few years have certainly been eventful; from Amy Jeffs, our Founder and Managing Director, growing the consultancy from a team of one to a team of five with the support of external consultants, onboarding new clients and growing existing ones, to navigating a pandemic and the addition of four babies – it is never quiet in the Hey Me world.

Our small but mighty team of communications experts are passionate about the world of storytelling and transforming our clients’ news into something standout and meaningful. We have now turned the lens on to ourselves and refreshed our website with a brand-new look and feel to showcase the evolution we have undergone over the years, which we hope you get a strong sense of.

To mark our fifth birthday, we spoke to each team member about what they have learnt since Hey Me began back in 2017. Read their thoughts here:

Amy Jeffs, Founder and Managing Director:
“From starting out as a freelancer and vowing I would never employ anyone to employing a team of five, soon to be seven, I have learnt a great deal since Hey Me began in 2017, from running a business, to managing my time more effectively and how to hold my nerve, amongst many other things.

“However, there are two things that particularly spring to mind: When you like what you are doing it’s amazing how little it feels like work – I still say I’m ‘playing’. The second is that with the right preparation the opportunities, from new business to building the team, happen and you have to be open to them when they come along.”

Gemma Colley, PR & Communications Manager:
“With our flexible, remote work policy and the fact that hybrid working has become far more common post-pandemic, I’ve recently realised that I enjoy the balance of both working at home and attending client offices. Having spent so much time working from home, visiting offices and having opportunities to speak face to face with colleagues and collaborators over the last few months has been a breath of fresh air.”

Emma Lever, PR & Communications Manager:

“The biggest thing I have learnt over the past five years and particularly since working at Hey Me, is to take the time to slow down and approach what I do, in all aspects of my life, in a more considered way.

“Hey Me’s flexible working policy allows me to do a job that I love, in particular creative copywriting for our clients, and have the space to grow and thrive. Having worked in hectic press offices and busy communications roles for over a decade, I really appreciate that Hey Me affords me to do my work efficiently and effectively, to a schedule and pattern that suits my personal style of working best.”

Amelia Spanton, Social Media & Communications Executive:

“Since joining Hey Me in March 2021 whilst still at university, I have had the opportunity to learn so much, both within my job and more broadly. So far, it’s been a fantastic opportunity to build knowledge and skills surrounded by a supportive team.

“The key insight I have gained is how essential communications is across all sectors and industries. Whether it’s social media or internal newsletters, communications benefits businesses and organisations of all kinds.”

Katie Browne, Business Support Manager:

“I’ve learned a lot in the past year with Hey Me, but one thing that stands out is in this ‘new normal’ is that it is possible to establish a strong, effective, flexible and highly supportive team despite distance and not being able to meet face to face for some time.”

We look forward to seeing what the next five years has in store for our team. Happy birthday Hey Me!

“Since day one, Amy herself has fit seamlessly into our team, understanding the message we want to convey and the audiences we want to reach. Her upfront audit was invaluable in helping us internally hone our common voice, which has demonstrated itself in the consistency of the content we put out as a brand and as individuals within the company. Behind the scenes, Amy has instinctively adopted our internal communication methods (Slack, SharePoint) and works closely with our in-house graphic design team to ensure our graphics and copy are in sync.” Lucy Prior MBE - previously from 3Squared 2021
“After meeting Amy a few years ago, I was able to provide her with an opportunity to manage the comms on a major alliance, alongside Marie from Doodle HR, which she flourished at. Amy helped me to implement a more structured approach, freeing up my time to work more closely with clients and create new content. Hey Me are easy to deal with and quick to provide valuable solutions; I wouldn’t hesitate to work with Amy and the team again” Karen Duncan - Lanehead Coniston
“Working with Hey Me is very straight forward - they take you through whatever process is needed, with clear instruction and good ideas. Since working with Hey Me, Zak Mobility now has a strong brand identity and purposeful website that is fit for purpose. I would recommend Hey Me to other companies, as they do a professional job with a friendly face.” Sam Pearce - CEO, Zak Mobility
“As a member of the RIA SME Leadership team, Amy ran a slimdown version of the Hey Me messaging workshops in 2023. The workshops helped the team to delve deeper into what the SME group stood for, what it meant to them as individuals and businesses and what they wanted to gain from communications. By holding up a mirror to those in the group and using a tiered approach, the group was able to find a common purpose and with Hey Me's help, a common language which best represented the aims of the leadership team and our RIA SME members. The fantastic results of this can be seen in action on our SME page of our website.” Isabella Lawson - Railway Industry Association
