Hey Me turns 4
Posted by Amelia Spanton on 28 August 2021

August marks Hey Me’s 4th Birthday so we thought there’s no better time for the team to take a step back and reflect on our time at Hey Me.

Over the last few years, it’s been great to see Hey Me grow from 1 to a team of 5. We’ve also had the chance to work with a number of companies across a wide range of sectors, from business coaching to rail software development.

Before setting up on her own in 2017, Amy worked for an array of companies from small agencies to multinational companies. Primarily, she founded Hey Me in order to help her manage her chronic illness better. Hey Me enables employees to work flexibly and remotely making it easier to fit round challenges such as health or working as a parent.

Amy sits overlooking the River Ouse in York.

Amy commented:

‘When I set off on my Hey Me journey it was hard to think of where I might end up. Originally working as a freelancer, I couldn’t really imagine it growing into an agency. But, as time went on, I found more opportunities to work with fantastic people and the team began to take shape. During the last 12 months alone, we have grown from a 2 person to 5 person team. When the team did begin to grow, I wanted to make sure that everyone had the flexibility to fit their working life around their home life. As creatives we work best at different times of the day and night and ensuring we have flexibility enables the team to deliver their best work when it most suits them. As long as we’re around when our clients need us, we offer the best possible service and we’re able to support each other – that’s what it’s all about.’

Let’s hear what the team have to say about why they love working at Hey Me.

Gemma Colley, PR & Communications Associate

‘I love how we are a fantastic small team who all get on really well, providing support to each other when we need it and are genuine friends. Considering that none of us have ever met each other in person, we’re an incredibly close and strong unit professionally and personally.’

Emma Lever, PR & Communications Associate

‘I really enjoy working with my colleagues at Hey Me. Despite being spread all over the UK, having such a supportive and friendly team really makes it a great place to work. Always there at the end of the phone, we can talk about anything and everything, and I really can’t wait for our first face-to-face social soon!

In the past year, I have learnt to balance working at Hey Me part time alongside being a new mum. This has been the most significant and fulfilling periods of my career and life to date. Thanks to Hey Me’s flexible work pattern created by Amy and good backbone of support across the team, I feel enabled to be the best comms professional I can be and still be there for my little boy – the best of both worlds.’

Amelia Spanton, Social Media & Communications Executive

‘I really enjoy working in a small, close-knit company you get to know everyone and feel connected even though we work remotely. I’m so glad to have met the team, they are always fun to chat to and always there to lend a hand. Working for a small company like Hey Me I always feel valued as an employee and I’m grateful to work for a thoughtful, considerate company.

As this is my first job post-graduation after initially interning for Hey Me, it’s been a great opportunity to learn from experienced professionals who already have a wide range of experience in the industry. I have been given some great opportunities to experiment and learn more in a hands-on fashion. I also really appreciate being encouraged to upskill and learn more about marketing, PR and comms.

I would have never expected to find such a great role from my university internship!’

“Since day one, Amy herself has fit seamlessly into our team, understanding the message we want to convey and the audiences we want to reach. Her upfront audit was invaluable in helping us internally hone our common voice, which has demonstrated itself in the consistency of the content we put out as a brand and as individuals within the company. Behind the scenes, Amy has instinctively adopted our internal communication methods (Slack, SharePoint) and works closely with our in-house graphic design team to ensure our graphics and copy are in sync.” Lucy Prior MBE - previously from 3Squared 2021
“After meeting Amy a few years ago, I was able to provide her with an opportunity to manage the comms on a major alliance, alongside Marie from Doodle HR, which she flourished at. Amy helped me to implement a more structured approach, freeing up my time to work more closely with clients and create new content. Hey Me are easy to deal with and quick to provide valuable solutions; I wouldn’t hesitate to work with Amy and the team again” Karen Duncan - Lanehead Coniston
“Working with Hey Me is very straight forward - they take you through whatever process is needed, with clear instruction and good ideas. Since working with Hey Me, Zak Mobility now has a strong brand identity and purposeful website that is fit for purpose. I would recommend Hey Me to other companies, as they do a professional job with a friendly face.” Sam Pearce - CEO, Zak Mobility
“As a member of the RIA SME Leadership team, Amy ran a slimdown version of the Hey Me messaging workshops in 2023. The workshops helped the team to delve deeper into what the SME group stood for, what it meant to them as individuals and businesses and what they wanted to gain from communications. By holding up a mirror to those in the group and using a tiered approach, the group was able to find a common purpose and with Hey Me's help, a common language which best represented the aims of the leadership team and our RIA SME members. The fantastic results of this can be seen in action on our SME page of our website.” Isabella Lawson - Railway Industry Association
