Why work in the rail industry?

Us folk at Hey Me are what you call real rail advocates! With many of our clients spanning across various disciplines of the rail industry, we have developed a real passion and expertise for working with rail clients. A few of us have even worked in in-house rail roles in the past – so you could say we know a thing or two about the rail industry.

So why do we love it so much? Here are our top reasons:

Working with innovative SMEs and masterminds!

There has been so much change in the rail industry recently, specifically when it comes to the proliferation of technology and digital advancements. We have worked with countless innovative SMEs who have developed the most amazing tools and solutions that are helping to transform the face of rail to enhance safety, streamline processes and contribute to reducing the industry’s overall carbon output.

As the Hey Me team attests, it’s incredibly rewarding to be able to help these businesses communicate their expertise and shout out about all the great work they are doing.

“Having worked in and alongside the rail industry since my RSSB days over a decade ago, I have always found it a highly rewarding industry to be involved in. Innovation has the potential to make a real-world advance, from improving accessibility to making positive environmental shifts, for a greener future.

It is fantastic to champion the work of our clients to showcase the power that it plays in making positive and meaningful changes and we look forward to collaborating with even more innovators and SMEs to showcase their work.” Emma Lever, Senior Communications Manager

“It’s highly satisfying being able to showcase all the amazing innovations being developed in the rail industry. We work with numerous rail technology clients who are extremely passionate about what they do, and being able to help them prosper by distilling their language and marketing their hard work is incredibly rewarding.” Jennifer Derrick, Content Development Manager

Positively impacts so many touchpoints of the wider environment

There are so many ways in which rail can support the wider environment – from contributing to a sustainable future, helping to connect our cities and towns, helping young talent get into STEM roles, pioneering amazing technology developed by SMEs…the list goes on! We’re thrilled to be able to contribute in some way by helping our rail clients promote their amazing businesses through PR, communications, and marketing.

“I feel like rail is overlooked and gets such bad press from the public. If it’s not delays, it’s strikes. If it’s not day-to-day running it’s the cost of a project that’s either going ahead or not going ahead against public opinion. It seems to me that no matter what the rail industry does, in the eyes of the public, it’s not doing it well.

But, if you look under the surface, the industry has so much to offer. We all use rail. Every single one of us. Every day. Before we even leave the house. That’s because a lot of household items will have been transported around the country by rail. It really is at the backbone of our lives in the UK, and when you look at the many businesses large and small that are involved in making it bigger, better, stronger, safer, more efficient, more cost-effective, there’s so much good news to find and share.

I love helping those people and companies who are striving to make the industry better to find their voice and be able to share more about their role in such a indispensable industry.” Amy Jeffs, Managing Director

Diverse career paths

The rail industry encompasses a wide range of professions, including engineering, operations, logistics, finance, marketing, and more. For those who are interested in technical roles, management positions, or creative endeavours, young graduates especially, there are countless career paths to explore. You can easily move around within rail too. As it’s such a specialist field, having expertise in the rail industry puts you in a prime position when it comes to job hunting.

“I really enjoy seeing innovation first-hand, and working in rail provides that. It has opened my eyes to the many practical technologies that are being created, and evolved, to create a more efficient rail service.” Olivia Berrell, Communications Intern

Working closely with rail industry clients enables me to contribute my storytelling expertise to enhancing our everyday infrastructure. I enjoy providing my support towards shaping the narrative of safety, efficiency, and innovation in the current UK rail industry.” Molly Bramham, Communications Assistant

“Since day one, Amy herself has fit seamlessly into our team, understanding the message we want to convey and the audiences we want to reach. Her upfront audit was invaluable in helping us internally hone our common voice, which has demonstrated itself in the consistency of the content we put out as a brand and as individuals within the company. Behind the scenes, Amy has instinctively adopted our internal communication methods (Slack, SharePoint) and works closely with our in-house graphic design team to ensure our graphics and copy are in sync.” Lucy Prior MBE - previously from 3Squared 2021
“I saved so much time after implementing a more structured approach which has given me the opportunity to focus on creating more content and work more closely with my clients. Amy and her team are easy to deal with and are quick to provide valuable solutions. I would not hesitate to work with Hey Me again in the future.” Karen Duncan - Lanehead Coniston
“I met Amy a few years ago at a Young Rail Professionals event and was able to provide her with an opportunity to manage the comms on a major alliance which she flourished at. Soon after she started, Marie came along to provide HR support across the multiple businesses. It seems only natural that being as dynamic and knowledge as they are, they are looking to work together on this new venture, which I am sure will be a huge success.” Karen Duncan - Lanehead Coniston
