Sow the seeds for stronger communications
Posted by Emma Lever on 11 June 2026

When it comes to sowing the seeds of an effective communications strategy, a little preparation goes a long way.

Before you begin, ask yourself:

  • Do you truly understand your audience and their needs?
  • Can you clearly articulate what you do to someone new?
  • Do you know which tactics will support your business goals?

These are just a few of the essential questions that may spring to mind. Taking the time to ‘prepare the soil’ is vital before activating any communications plan.

At Hey Me, we understand how foundational this stage is. Whenever we begin collaborating with a new client, our first step is a comprehensive audit, where we explore business aims, audiences, competitors, and the brand presence built so far. This insight shapes the bespoke messaging strategy we later develop with you through a series of in-depth workshops.

This is just one part of the holistic process we follow. To help you understand why this groundwork matters so much, we have put together a series of top tips to help you grow engaging communications from the ground up.

Analyse your landscape

Research is the root system of any strong communications strategy. Speak to stakeholders to uncover challenges, explore LinkedIn conversations within your industry, and read trade publications to stay informed about sector trends. This time and investment will pay dividends later, instilling you with clarity, confidence, and direction.

Step into your customers’ shoes

To create meaningful solutions, you must understand the challenges your audience is trying to solve. Approach this with empathy. Explore pain points and frustrations. When you understand their world, you can position your offering as the answer they’ve been looking for.

Plant the seed

Research and planning are only the beginning. Don’t let your strategy sit untouched in a document. Nurture the ideas that you have and bring it to life. Launch that social media profile, evaluate your ideas, or work with communications professionals (like our team at Hey Me) to guide your next steps.

Nourish your ideas

Ideas only grow when you give them attention. Turn your stories into content for your website or social channels. Share your thinking at industry events or trade shows. Nurture the ideas that you have and let them flourish.

Care for your communications

Communications activities are often overlooked until they become urgent. Yet in today’s content-saturated world, communications, PR, and marketing functions are more important than ever. Audiences expect regular updates, useful insights, and a steady stream of engaging content. By investing in your communications, you build visibility, trust, and long-term impact.

We hope that you find this insight useful as you prepare the soil for your communications. If you are looking to build on your activity and don’t know where to begin, contact a member of the Hey Me tea to discuss this via communicate@heyme.co.uk or our contact page.

“Since day one, Amy herself has fit seamlessly into our team, understanding the message we want to convey and the audiences we want to reach. Her upfront audit was invaluable in helping us internally hone our common voice, which has demonstrated itself in the consistency of the content we put out as a brand and as individuals within the company. Behind the scenes, Amy has instinctively adopted our internal communication methods (Slack, SharePoint) and works closely with our in-house graphic design team to ensure our graphics and copy are in sync.” Lucy Prior MBE - previously from 3Squared 2021
“After meeting Amy a few years ago, I was able to provide her with an opportunity to manage the comms on a major alliance, alongside Marie from Doodle HR, which she flourished at. Amy helped me to implement a more structured approach, freeing up my time to work more closely with clients and create new content. Hey Me are easy to deal with and quick to provide valuable solutions; I wouldn’t hesitate to work with Amy and the team again” Karen Duncan - Lanehead Coniston
“Working with Hey Me is very straight forward - they take you through whatever process is needed, with clear instruction and good ideas. Since working with Hey Me, Zak Mobility now has a strong brand identity and purposeful website that is fit for purpose. I would recommend Hey Me to other companies, as they do a professional job with a friendly face.” Sam Pearce - CEO, Zak Mobility
“As a member of the RIA SME Leadership team, Amy ran a slimdown version of the Hey Me messaging workshops in 2023. The workshops helped the team to delve deeper into what the SME group stood for, what it meant to them as individuals and businesses and what they wanted to gain from communications. By holding up a mirror to those in the group and using a tiered approach, the group was able to find a common purpose and with Hey Me's help, a common language which best represented the aims of the leadership team and our RIA SME members. The fantastic results of this can be seen in action on our SME page of our website.” Isabella Lawson - Railway Industry Association
